Date Completed 2000

Project Details

One of several projects completed for SeaWorld showcases the gentle manatee. Underwater viewing panels were installed in the manatee exhibit in order to properly show the animal and its traits. RPT supplied four, monolithic R-Cast™ acrylic panels to create a total viewing area 106 feet wide x 9 feet high (32.3m W x 2.7m H).

Through our value engineering process, we were able to stay within budget while still maintaining the beauty of the original design. To do this, it was decided to replace any expensive on-site bonding with silicone joints, and locate the joints in a way to eliminate mullions. This successfully allowed for maximum viewing of the manatees and reduction in the overall project cost.

This exhibit at SeaWorld was named the best new zoological exhibit in the country by the American Zoological Association (AZA) for the level at which the conservation efforts took place. All manatees in the habitat were rescued, and all manatees that grew to be healthy enough in the habitat were then released back into their natural, wild environment.
