Date Completed 1998

Project Details

The Aquarium of the Pacific in Long Beach features marine animals exclusively from the Pacific Ocean. RPT supplied R-Cast™ acrylic for several of the main exhibits at the aquarium. In one of the exhibits, three large R-Cast™ panels allow viewing of the Blue Cavern, a 142,000 gallon (537,000 liter) three-story tall aquarium. The panels total up to a viewing area over 23 feet wide (7.1m) and 25 feet high (7.6m). Each of the three windows is 9 inches thick (228.6mm) and each window weighs 13,500 pounds (6.12 metric tons).

RPT also supplied a demi-tunnel for the Tropical Pacific Gallery, the Aquarium’s largest exhibit containing 350,000 gallons (1.3 million liters). The design of this tunnel involved value engineering in order to stay within budget. Rather than a full acrylic tunnel, the demi-tunnel gives visitors a sense of being surrounded by water but only requires two large, seamless, curved acrylic wall panels instead to provide the illusion of being immersed in water.
