With the opening of L’Oceanogràfic, Valencia’s former river bank is turning into an architectural hotbed of projects. Owned by the municipal government’s Ciudad de Las Artes y Las Ciencas division (City of Arts & Sciences), the oceanarium features 500 marine species in 21 exhibits.
R-Cast™ acrylic is used throughout the aquarium in the construction of the tanks for the Caribbean and Indo-Pacific coral habitats, the swamp aviary, the penguin habitat, and the Red Sea habitat, the latter of which functions as a backdrop to a stage where performances take place. In total, the tanks hold more than 11 million gallons (42 million liters) of water and are home to 45,000 living organisms, including sharks, turtles, seals, beluga whales, dolphins, and penguins.
One of the largest projects for this aquarium required R-Cast™ acrylic to be cast into a tunnel 225 feet long (68.5m), 6 feet high (1.8m), and 2.5 inches thick (63.5mm). This tunnel was installed directly through one of the aquariums, giving visitors a chance to see marine life face-to-face, if not overhead.
