Thirteen panels and an underwater tunnel manufactured and fabricated by Reynolds Polymer Technology, Inc. in the U.S. and Thailand create two new exhibits at expanded marine park and Oceanarium in the Sichuan province. The R-Cast acrylic panels and underwater acrylic tunnel were assembled together to create exceptional views in the Shark Tank and Ocean Animals Exhibit.
Grand Junction, Colo. September 21, 2011– Visitors to the new Chengdu Haichang Polar Ocean World in China have two new exhibits they can explore, thanks, in part, to R-Cast acrylic from Reynolds Polymer Technology, Inc. (RPT). A number of flat panels, curved panels, and an underwater tunnel allow visitors to explore the ocean in new ways and experience a variety of marine life. The landlocked city in the Sichuan province is the only marine park and oceanarium in western China.
RPT worked in conjunction with RPT Asia, Ltd. to manufacture, fabricate, and ship 13 panels that were transformed into a Shark Tank exhibit and the Undersea World exhibit. The largest of the flat panels is slightly more than 40 feet long, 12 feet tall, and is 6.6 inches thick, which was the largest panel in China when initially designed. The largest of the curved panels provides a 35 foot wide view and is nine feet tall at 3.3 inches thick.
The tunnel was built in two sections with a bend in the middle, and in total, is slightly more than 45 feet long with 18 foot tall vertical views.
“Of all these panels, the S-shaped window we supplied and installed was the most complex,” stated Roger R. Reynolds, CEO of RPT and RPT Asia, Ltd. “It required more intricate engineering to ensure it not only achieved the look Chengdu Polar Ocean World desired, but that it met our safety requirements for both the animals on display and the public.”
This S-shaped panel measures 27 feet long, 7.5 feet tall, and is 3.25 inches thick. The asymmetrical curvature of the panel contributed to the complexity of the engineering and manufacture.
RPT was selected to complete this project because of the decades of experience in manufacturing, fabricating, and installing similarly large acrylic panels for renowned aquariums and institutions across the globe.
These exhibits round out the 40,000 square meter marine park and oceanarium that’s divided into five main areas. The Shark Tank and Undersea World are part of the Ocean Animals Exhibit, which has the most animals in the park. Chengdu Polar Ocean Park opened to the public in late July 2011.
